Overview

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of making a website more relevant for targeted keywords. Unlike Pay-Per-Click Search Marketing, the placement of the natural search results is determined by complex algorithms controlled by Google, Yahoo and MSN. These algorithms typically look at the following factors when deciding which site should take top position for a keyword search:

1. Onsite content - Onsite content includes visible copy as well as hidden tags that describe pages to computers that visit the website automatically. The search engines scan this content and determine what the site is about by the density of certain words and the hidden descriptive tags.
   
2. The network of links to and from the site - Search Engines use the links that we see on pages to weave together the relationships among sites. These linkages and the text used to link help the search engines determine which sites might be better for the searched phrase.
